What would cause this?
What causes media oppression in a nation? Obviously if blatant human rights violations are occurring from members of the government they don't want people knowing about it. With social media and the hype around it today, there are no secrets unless someone is controlling the flow of information. We're building a bridge over that wall, but we can't start doing that until we know why someone would oppress the flow of media.

-Dictatorships: While it can be declared in some instances as a universal form of corruption, when a leader doesn't wish to leave office and rigs elections, or controls the entire spread of power in a region they have full control over all activities occurring within the nation. Because of this, they control the flow of information to the people, and the flow of the people back into the world. They can lock down borders, the internet, universally block social media accounts on the nations systems, and isolate the country. This unspeakable act isolates the population, and allows the government to get away with whatever they want within a country.
-Poverty: A hungry person is a desperate person. Bribes can be paid to stem the flow of information or stop news from spreading. While impoverished people generally live in a single area, (slums, townships) news can quickly spread around a village or region of governmental acts. However as long as the people living in poverty have no way of voicing their experience to the world they have no hope of ever truly being heard.
-Isolation: A country completely isolated from the world has a credibility problem. By shutting its borders, its shipping routes, import and export goods, and news flow they quickly become forgotten. Because of this, when something happens within the borders of the isolated nation no one is around to listen.
